Save Time Raking. Help Your Lawn by Mulching Leaves

It is that time of year again; where the weather starts to get colder and we begin to see our beautiful trees lose their leaves. Those large coniferous trees in our yards that lose their leaves create extra work for us home owners.

However, there is some good news. Instead of buying bags and filling them with leaves every year, we have a simple and cheap way of dealing with these leaves.  All you have to do is mow these leaves into your grass. Mulching leaves into your lawn using your lawnmower will improve your lawns soil by adding nutrients and other organic matter to the existing soil bed.

How To Chop Those Leaves With Your Mower

If you plan on mulching your leaves into your lawn, you will first require a lawn mower with a mulching blade. The good news is that most mowers now come with mulching blades. A mulching blade will ensure that the leaves are shredded into very small pieces. This will assist with the decomposition process.

The mulched leaves should be around the size of a dime. If they are larger, simply run over them again with your lawn mower.

IMPORTANT TIP: The shredded leaves should be raked into your lawn so they are not carpeting over the top of your grass. This will prevent the leaves from suffocating you lawn, and will also help with the leaves decomposition process.

Your Lawn Will Look Amazing in the Spring

Preparing your lawn properly in the fall will ensure that come spring, your will have the best looking and healthiest lawn on your street.

When spring arrives, and the snow has melted away, you will notice that all of the mulched leaves have decomposed and are no longer visible. This is always a great sign that your spring lawn care plan is working. The decomposed mulched leaves will now add vital nutrients to your lawn during the spring “green up.”

Come spring, we also recommend a quick fertilizer application. For people like myself, I aim for a balance NPK fertilizer, but in the spring I will tend to shoot for a fertilizer with a bit more iron. Once dissolved into the soil, the iron will assist with producing very green blades of grass.

Throughout the season, I will fertilize 2 more times, once in June and another application in September.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your lawn properly in the fall will ensure that come spring, your will have the best looking and healthiest lawn on your street. Following the above steps will save you money and will ensure a healthy lawn come spring time.
