If you own a website, one of the most important things to focus on is SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and this is vital to having your website appear in search engine results, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo.
If you are a beginner web developer, following these simple steps will help your website gain more views and have a much better exposure on search engines.
Step 1: Publish Relevant and Unique Content
Publishing relevant and unique content is vital in having a high ranking website. Having quality content is a big plus for search engines and will ultimately help retain users once they arrive at your site. The goal is to keep users engaged for as long as possible.
Ways to engage users include:
- Having content that they can relate to
- Having easy to read content (Grade 5 level of writing)
- Use bolded words and italics to help key words of phrases stand out; and
- Don’t copy content from other websites
A big NO NO is using copied content from other websites. Search engines such as Google have ways of filtering copied content. If your content is not original this will not help your search engine ranking.
Step 2: Post Regularly
Posting regularly not only keeps your users engaged but also keeps Google and other search engines continuously crawling your website. Posting regular content is probably one of the hardest things to do as a website owner.
Fresh Posts Are Key
For a small starter website we recommend 1-2 new posts per week. For a more established website with active users, we recommend over 4 posts per week. For a comparison, take a look at websites such as the Verge or TechCrunch.
Step 3: Use Alt Tags
Almost every type of website has images or some type of media content. Photos and static images have no wording, so how can you describe them? Well, this is done through ALT TAGS.
For people using website platforms such as WordPress, adding alt-tags to images and other types of media content is very easy. Simply go to your media page and select the media content that you want to add the alt-tag to. Once you click on the image, on the right hand side of the page you will see any area where you can add your alt-tag.
Step 4: Use Key Works
Having a good selection and accurate key words are very important to the ranking of your website. Key words are the words that search engines will pick up. Keywords are very important because they act as the bridge between what potential visitors are searching for in their search engine and the content on your website.
The key to having good keywords and key phrases is to really understand your audience. Think to yourself, if I was looking for something one my website, what will I type into Google?
If we were looking for information on the best pick-up truck in 2019, what will you type into Google? This would likely entail key phrases made up of multiple words that relate to the subject topic, which may include:
- Best Pick-Up Trucks 2019
- Top Truck in 2019
- 2019 Best Trucks
If your website was advertising the top pickup trucks of 2019, you will want to add the above key words and phrases. Although it may not be grammatically correct, this is what most people will type into their search engine.
A great tool to research keywords based on topics is the Google Keyword Planner tool.
Step 5: Create Links
Link building is key to a positive SEO. There are two types of link building, which includes having links to other sites on your website, and also having content from your website linked to from other websites.
Some people go ahead and start providing links from their website on a variety of sites, social media platforms and other place. This is not what you should do!
Link building requires a balanced approach and a well thought out process. You should only build links with trusted sites and sites that have a common outlook to what you are conveying on your website. You want as many high quality links to your site as possible. If you have a website selling car parts, you don’t want to be creating links with a website that sell baby supplies.
If you are a beginner to SEO and web development, a very easy thing to do is start with INTERNAL LINK BUILDING. This involves inserting links, or redirects to other pages within your website, integrated within pages such as blog posts.
For example, if you have a website that sells aftermarket car parts, and you have a blog posts that explains the benefits of buying aftermarket vs. original manufacture parts, you can creating a direct link within your blog post to products that you also have for sale on the website.
The practice of SEO is tricky and is not an exact science. There are many ways to help improve your website ranking in search engines such as Google, and following the above tips will help you. If you have any questions about SEO techniques let us know by commenting in the section below.
